SUBJECT: First Nations Women's Issues

WHEREAS one of the fundamental mandates of First Nations govemments is the protection and enhancement of rights, opportunities and services for women; and

WHEREAS political issues affecting women are the jurisdiction of First Nations govemments should be dealt with by First Nations govemments and representatives of First Nation govemments; and

WHEREAS through resolution no. 10/98, the Confederacv of Nations recognized the need for integration into the mainstream of all Assembly of First Nations activities as a first step toward ensuring that First Nations women contribute as respected, valued and equal partners; and

WHEREAS Confederacy resolution 10/98 further resolved that the Assembly of First Nations establish a national First Nations Gender Equality Secretariat to become a part of the Assembly of First Nations; and

WHEREAS some First Nations of Ontario have taken steps to form women's advisory councils to address local issues conceming women within their communities; and

WHEREAS at the 24th Annual All Ontario Chiefs' Conference, the First Nations in Ontario supported the need to address First Nations women's issues and resolved to form a planning committee to organize a Conference in order to prioritize and resolve womens issues; and 

WHEREAS this committee seeks to extend an invitation to represenatives from First Nations nationally;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly of First Nations work in conjunction with the planning committee from Ontario to create opportunities for participation, advocacy and resourcing; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Chiefs in Assembly undertake to support this team in taking steps to work toward the implementation of the First Nations Gender Equality Secretariat at the Assembly of First Nations.
