(Ottawa, ON) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde congratulates Northern Cree Singers for their latest Grammy Awards nomination as well as their upcoming performance as part of the Premiere Ceremony.
“Through Northern Cree’s participation at the Grammys, millions of viewers around the world will be able to experience the distinct sounds of traditional First Nations music. They are remarkable representatives of the vibrancy of our cultures through song and language,” said AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde.
The Northern Cree Singers, with members hailing from communities throughout Treaty Six Territory, have been taking traditional First Nations music to the next level since 1983. They are known for their distinct sound that has resonated across pow-wow arbours and stages throughout Turtle Island and around the world. This is their seventh nomination to the Grammy Awards, this time for their Round Dance album entitled “It’s a Cree Thing”. It was nominated in the “Regional Roots Category”.
National Chief Bellegarde stated: “Through this latest achievement, Northern Cree embody their motto: ‘If you believe in yourself, who you are, where you come from, your culture and more importantly your language, it will take you to places you have never even dreamed of.’ ”
Northern Cree will be part of the opening act for the 59th Annual GRAMMY P remiere Ceremony which will be part of the live stream coverage of the event on February 12.
