Ottawa, ON — Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief RoseAnne Archibald is calling for increased support for First Nations as wildfires continue to sweep through British Columbia and Alberta.
“I’m devastated by the effects these wildfires have had on so many vulnerable First Nations communities,” said National Chief Archibald. “My heart is with everyone whose safety is compromised, who has had to leave their home and territories to evacuate and have had to cope with the loss of homes and property. Without the necessary infrastructure and resources to support prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery—as well as replacing homes and effecting quick repatriation—our people will continue to face disproportionately high costs and mental stress due to these wildfires.”
“I ask everyone to keep those affected in their hearts and minds in the days ahead, and I lift up the first responders and volunteers working to contain the fires across vast areas of land. I thank you all for your bravery in keeping our communities safe,” concluded National Chief.
Many communities continue to face heat warnings and evacuation alerts and orders. National Chief Archibald asks all levels of government and individuals to find their own pathways to supporting First Nations affected by these fires.
