First Nations Veterans Council Honours First Nations Veterans on D-Day Anniversary

Published: Jun 06, 2023Press Release

June 6, 2023, Ottawa, ON – The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) First Nations Veterans Council is commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, also known as D-Day, and honouring the contributions of First Nations veterans who fought for the peace and freedom of all Canadians.

Earlier this year, the AFN and Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) signed a Letter of Understanding that included increasing Indigenous representation in commemorative ceremonies.

“Today is an opportunity to honour the sacrifices and commitments First Nations Veterans and to uplift those for their bravery, service, and accomplishments,” noted Percy Joe, AFN First Nations Veterans Council.

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that First Nations veterans are included and honoured their service and commitments in all commemorative ceremonies and events. Overseas battles had First Nations and settler Canadians side-by-side in loss of life and triumph. It would be a disservice to all Veterans if we ignore how we were, and continue to be, allies in times of peace and war.”

As outlined in Resolution 20-02 AFN First Nations Veterans Council, AFN Leadership and members of the First Nations Veterans Council continue to support the establishment of a historical record of First Nations Veterans and soldiers who served in Canada’s past war efforts.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a national advocacy organization that works to advance the collective aspirations of First Nations individuals and communities across Canada on matters of national or international nature and concern. Follow AFN on Twitter @AFN_Updates.
