Ottawa, Unceded Algonquin Territory, ON — National Chief RoseAnne Archibald issued the following statement marking National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to recognize Indigenous people’s rich history, diversity, and contributions across Turtle Island.
“On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the unique contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit and lift up the voices, histories, and cultures of our diverse Nations, communities and ancestors,” said National Chief RoseAnne Archibald. “While today is an opportunity to celebrate, it is also an opportunity to reflect the true shared history of First Nations in Canada.”
“Much work remains to be completed, including the full implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action and National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) 231Calls for Justice. Eliminating discriminatory and divisive policies remains a top priority as we mark Indigenous Peoples Day and as our collective responsibility to create safe spaces where First Nations are respected, valued, and celebrated for their leadership and strength.
As we mark National Indigenous Peoples Day and the Summer Solstice, a time for ceremony, healing, and community gatherings, I call on all Canadians to participate in one of the many events to celebrate and learn about our heritage, languages, and cultures, and commit to moving forward together in a good way.”
