AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak Attends World Intellectual Property Organization’s Diplomatic Conference

(May 21, 2024 – Geneva, Switzerland) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak is in Geneva, Switzerland, this week to attend the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Diplomatic Conference on Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge.

The WIPO Diplomatic Conference is considering the adoption of an accord on providing protections and greater transparency in the patent regime relating to inventions that utilize Indigenous traditional knowledge and genetic resources. Bringing together delegates from around the world representing the interests and expertise of many Indigenous groups, delegates are tasked with the review and approval of an international accord to protect Indigenous Peoples traditional medicines, use of genetic resources and knowledge associated with genetic resources.

“First Nations traditional knowledge is an invaluable resource that has served our Nations since the beginning of time,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “An international agreement that protects First Nations traditional knowledge and creates greater transparency for those seeking to applying for intellectual property rights based on First Nations knowledge on the world stage is a tremendous step forward. This conference is the culmination of decades of advocacy from First Nations and other Indigenous groups to preserve and revitalize rich cultural traditions.”
