(October 16, 2024 –Treaty No. 7 Territory, Calgary, Alberta) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak released the following statement today as the proceedings began for the Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) on Long-Term Reform of First Nations Child and Family Services (FNCFS), where Chiefs and Proxies will have the opportunity to dialogue on the proposed Draft Agreement and vote on resolutions that will determine the next steps for long-term reform.
“I am looking forward to a very productive week,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “We have a full agenda of informative presentations, plenary sessions, and ample time for discussion and to hear from attendees. I know we will engage in passionate and constructive dialogue from the Chiefs and Proxies as this is critical work, and it deserves careful and considerate conversation.”
“We have worked hard to provide Chiefs with the information they need to make an important decision this week, and I’m pleased to say that we were able to bring proposed amendments to the negotiating table that have been unanimously accepted. The revised Draft Agreement that we will present this week captures that critical feedback we heard from Chiefs over the last several months, and I am confident that we will move forward this week with a historic agreement that will be a major turning point for First Nations children and families.”
