(October 16, 2024 – Treaty No. 7, Calgary, Alberta) – Today, Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak and Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Deputy Grand Chief Anna Betty Achneepineskum, Ontario Representative for the AFN Women’s Council, honoured the life of Grand Chief Cathy Merrick at the Special Chiefs Assembly in Calgary, Alberta.
“Grand Chief Merrick was a dedicated advocate and a powerful voice, who worked tirelessly for First Nations people. She was a spiritual person who cherished her ceremonies and family,” said NAN Deputy Grand Chief Anna Betty Achneepineskum, Ontario Representative for the AFN Women’s Council. “On behalf of the AFN Women’s Council, we recognize not only her significant contributions and leadership on the Council but also her commitment and dedication in protecting First Nations women, girls, and gender-diverse people.”
“Grand Chief Cathy Merrick demonstrated what can be achieved with strong, compassionate leadership,” said AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “Her dedication to justice for First Nations is a part of her legacy. She will be missed by many. We are grateful to honour her today at the Special Chiefs Assembly, and we lift up her family and all those touched by her life, as well as the staff at the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.”
