Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Bulletin – AFN Executive Committee Adopts Resolutions from the December 2024 Special Chiefs Assembly

Summary:

  • From December 3-5, 2024, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) held a Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) on the traditional unceded territory of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation, in Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Resolutions that were not brought to the floor for debate during the December 2024 Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) were referred to the AFN Executive Committee for consideration in accordance with AFN Rules and Procedures.
  • On February 6, 2025, the AFN Executive Committee reviewed six deferred resolutions and adopted them by consensus.
  • Final, signed copies of these resolutions are now available on the AFN website.

SCA Resolutions

From December 3-5, 2024, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) held a Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) on the traditional unceded territory of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation, in Ottawa, Ontario. During the SCA, the First Nations-in-Assembly passed 34 resolutions.

Resolutions that were not brought to the floor during the December 2024 Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) were reviewed by the AFN Executive Committee in accordance with AFN Rules and Procedures. On February 6, 2025, during a hybrid Executive Committee meeting, the Committee reviewed and approved the following resolutions:

  • 98-2025, Solidarity with Palestine and Palestinian Self-Determination
  • 99-2025, Pardon for Steve Donziger
  • 100-2025, Support for Increased First Nations Languages Funding
  • 101-2025, Alignment of National Strategies Enabling Community-Driven, Nation-Based Planning and Self-Determination
  • 102-2025, Call for Canada to Fulfill the UN Declaration Obligations in Relation to Proposed Carbon Capture and Storage Projects
  • 103-2025, Call for Permanent All-Season Road in the Territories of Windigo First Nations Council

These resolutions have now been signed by AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak and are available on the AFN website.

Outstanding resolutions, pending approval of movers and seconders, will be deferred to the Annual General Assembly (AGA) that will take place on July 15-17, 2025, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
