(October 16, 2025 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak released the following statement today following the discovery of the remains of 14-year-old Samuel Bird, last seen on June 1, 2025.

“The Assembly of First Nations extends our support and our love to the Bird family and Paul First Nation as they face this tragic development,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “All of our young people matter. Canada must work with our leadership to protect them and to prioritize action on the safety and security of all First Nation people. We need to work together to achieve that goal and put in place resources and strategies to end violence against First Nations people, including men and boys.”

The National Chief called for urgent, collaborative action on AFN Resolution 15/2023, Support for Advocacy and the Establishment of a Working Group to Address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Men and Boys, recently passed by First Nations-in Assembly to address this urgent issue.

“I am praying for the Bird family as they deal with this tragedy,” concluded National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “I lift them up as they seek justice for Samuel and I pray for their healing and peace and the healing of everyone affected.”
