Make Your Voice Heard on the Development of Critical Minerals in Canada Study
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources (RNNR) is undertaking a Development of Critical Minerals in Canada Study. A motion recently passed for members of RNNR to travel to Saguenay, Quebec to review the Northern Corridor project and Sudbury, Ontario to discuss mining projects in Northern Ontario. This work began October 14, 2025.
Canada’s critical mineral strategy, designed to accelerate the production of minerals essential for technologies such as batteries and renewable energy, has significant implications for First Nations. Exploration of critical minerals in these regions and elsewhere presents both risks and opportunities. It is crucial that Canada’s approach to critical minerals fully respects the Inherent and Treaty rights of First Nations, re-affirmed in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration).
The deadline to submit a brief on the impacts of the Critical Minerals Study is October 23, 2025. First Nations input is a crucial part of this work.
