(October 20, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak today welcomed the result of the October 19 Alberta referendum rejecting separation, stating that the people of Alberta and First Nations stood together and chose a future in Canada built on Treaty and sharing, over division and chaos.

“The Assembly of First Nations supports yesterday’s referendum result that so clearly rejects separation. First Nations and Albertan voters turned out in huge numbers and stood up for our shared past, present and future in Canada and rejected a divisive proposal that would bring needless upheaval, conflict and uncertainty for everyone,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “The results of this vote speak volumes: We are stronger together. The AFN thanks the Chiefs and citizens of Treaties 6, 7 and 8 for working so hard to educate and encourage Albertans about our relationships with the Crown and First Nations rights and responsibilities to our traditional territories.”

In the provincial referendum held Monday, Alberta citizens voted in a clear majority to remain part of Canada, rejecting the proposal for the provincial government to begin the process of holding a second, binding referendum on separation.

“AFN leadership look forward to meeting with Premier Danielle Smith and all First Ministers during next week’s First Nations-First Ministers’ Meeting, that will provide an opportunity to re-affirm and advance implementation of Treaty relationships and First Nations rights under the Constitution and international law. We have invited Premier Smith and all First Ministers to take part in the Day of Ceremony on October 25. It is time to look forward together to building prosperity and well-being for all.”
