The 45th General Election is taking place on April 28, 2025. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is working together with Elections Canada to reduce barriers to First Nations’ participation for those that choose to vote.
Elections Canada is currently working to finalize plans for advance and voting day polls for First Nations communities. Returning Officers are a critical part of this process. Returning Officers are responsible for overseeing elections in each federal electoral district. Their role includes working with First Nations communities to support local voting access, coordinate polling locations, and ensure voter registration services are in place. Returning Officers receive guidance from Elections Canada on accommodating First Nations’ voting needs and can help arrange alternative options, such as mail-in ballots or temporary polling sites, for communities affected by evacuation or other disruptions.
In some cases, Returning Officers have been unable to connect with local leaders to confirm services that meet community needs, finalize locations, and establish leases. If your community is interested in having in-community polls and has not yet heard from or connected with the local Returning Officer for your electoral district, please contact the Returning Officer as soon as possible.
To locate your Returning Officer, visit elections.ca and use the “My Voter Information” tool, or call Elections Canada directly at 1-800-463-6868.
