(July 26, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – Today, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak welcomed newly elected Dene National Chief and Regional Chief George Mackenzie of Northwest Territories to the AFN Executive Committee.
“As a two-term Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief, newly elected Dene National Chief and Northwest Territories Regional Chief George Mackenzie has accomplished significant work to benefit his community, including a historic agreement with the territorial government to work directly with Tłı̨chǫ business on infrastructure projects,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “We are pleased to extend our congratulations and welcome him to the AFN Executive Committee. We look forward to working with Dene National Chief Mackenzie on our shared priorities, such as advancing the well-being of First Nations children and families, fully implementing the Calls to Action and Calls to Justice, and closing the infrastructure gap.”
“We also thank outgoing Regional Chief Gerald Antoine for his commitment to the AFN Executive Committee. He has been integral to the important work of honouring and supporting Indian Residential School Survivors and families, including advocating for a Papal apology and special interlocutor on unmarked burials.”
