(Ottawa, Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ontario) – On October 26, 2023, Interim National Chief Joanna Bernard addressed the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) to discuss the AFN’s 2024 pre-budget submission. This submission highlights the importance of investments in First Nations to not only recognize their unique and inherent rights but also lay the path forward for a collaborative future, benefiting all of Canada.
“On Thursday, I brought forward key priorities for First Nations to achieve true economic reconciliation,” said Interim National Chief Joanna Bernard. “Building a renewed fiscal relationship between First Nations and Canada, is a fundamental priority. Critical initiatives like closing the infrastructure gap by 2030 will enable community safety, well-being, and economic participation. These investments include $135.1 billion investment spread over seven years to address immediate housing needs, $35.5 billion to ensure all-season road access for First Nations, and $5.23 billion to close the digital divide by enabling First Nations to reach Canada’s minimum broadband standards for high-speed internet, among others.”
“Economic Reconciliation becomes tangible when our focus shifts from addressing poverty to managing wealth. First Nations are the key to strengthening Canada’s economy,” said Interim National Chief Joanna Bernard. “As we approach the tabling of the 2024 federal budget, we look forward to meaningful commitments that reflect the needs and aspirations of First Nations communities across Canada and tangible investments to support our shared priority for a prosperous future.”
