(June 11, 2025 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak issued the following statement to recognize the beginning of Pride Month, an important time to honour and support Two Spirit and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people in our communities.
“On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations, we are proud to recognize Pride Month. Two Spirit people have held vital roles in our Nations since time immemorial. They carry teachings, responsibilities, and gifts that continue to strengthen our communities. Pride Month is a time to honour those roles, to stand in solidarity with our 2SLGBTQQIA+ relatives, and to call for action that ensures their rights, safety, and belonging,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “We encourage everyone to take part in Pride Month events and activities across the country, whether by joining a local celebration, learning about Two Spirit histories, or listening to 2SLGBTQQIA+ voices.”
“June is an extra special time for our 2SLGBTQQIA+ family, as it is both Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month,” said Duane Gastant Aucoin, Chair of the AFN 2SLGBTQQIA+ Council. “For us, they are connected, as 2S+ people are an important part of our Indigenous history. However, much of this history has been forgotten due to colonization and foreign morals and beliefs being forced upon us. We are once again beginning that journey of remembrance and celebration. While we continue to face attacks from both outside and within our Indigenous communities, we are stronger than any hate and intolerance, and we will survive and thrive. We call upon all our People to celebrate with us, as we are all Children of the Creator, and each of us holds an important role in helping our people. On behalf of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ Council, we wish you all a Happy Indigenous History and Pride Month!”
