(August 22, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak made the following statement today in response to the suspension of Canada/US trade negotiations:
“We stand with Prime Minister Carney against Donald Trump’s illegal tariffs. We also lift-up Minister LeBlanc and Canada’s negotiating team for their efforts to secure a fair deal.
First Nations have always been there for Canada in difficult times. The War of 1812. Two World Wars. Korean and Afghanistan Wars. Two Quebec referendums and the global pandemic.
We know that this is another one of those times.
First Nations are fundamental partners in this country. Our ancestors welcomed settlers to these shores. We have always supported prosperity and economic growth that respects Rights and protects the environment.
Over the immediate months ahead, we look forward to working with the Prime Minister and his Cabinet through September’s global investment summit, the return of Parliament, the 2026 federal budget and this fall’s historic meeting of First Ministers and First Nation leaders in Ottawa.
Since becoming National Chief in 2023, the AFN has accelerated our communication with the National Congress of American Indians. After a year of discussions, we renewed our cross-border Kinship Agreement in March. With the suspension of Canada/US trade negotiations, we will accelerate this work and invite. Congress representatives to participate in the AFN’s December Assembly in Ottawa.”
“We look forward to a strategic discussion, and welcoming our brothers and sisters from south of the medicine line.”
