(February 11, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak released the following statement today in response to shootings that occurred in Kitigan Zibi, Quebec and Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

“The last 24 hours have been filled with undue tragedy,” said National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “The violence that has taken place in Kitigan Zibi and Tumbler Ridge is devastating. My heart goes out to these communities. Children are our greatest gift from the Creator, and they should always feel safe and protected—whether at school, at home, with family or with classmates. I am deeply saddened that we have lost so many lives so swiftly to criminal gun violence.

I am praying for everyone affected as we all grieve these tragedies. I lift up the students and faculty of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and Chief Jean-Guy Whiteduck and everyone at Kitigan Zibi. I extend my full support and deepest condolences to them, their communities, and to all those mourning today.”
