(June 4, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak today issued the following statement in recognition of the 300th anniversary of the Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1726, a foundational agreement between Mi’kmaw, Wəlastəkokewiyik, and Peskətəmohkatewey leadership and the British Crown. The Treaty, ratified on June 4, 1726, was the first of its kind. The articles of the Treaty went on to inform future Treaties with First Nations.

“Today, we recognize and honour the 300th anniversary of the Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1726, a historic agreement that affirmed a Nation-to-Nation relationship with the Crown,” said National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “This Treaty established commitments to peace, respect, and the recognition of First Nations’ inherent rights and jurisdiction. This Treaty, like all Treaties, holds constitutional significance that reaffirms and protects the rights of the Mi’kmaw, Wəlastəkokewiyik, and Peskətəmohkatewey peoples.”

“As we commemorate this important milestone, we honour the wisdom and leadership of the ancestors who negotiated these agreements with future generations in mind,” continued National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “We think of this history that binds us together today, and we remember that Treaties are sacred, living documents that continue to guide relationships between First Nations and the Crown. We continue to call on the Crown to uphold its Treaty obligations from coast to coast to coast, and to nurture the spirit and intent of Peace and Friendship and all Treaties.”
