(December 1, 2025 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) — National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, along with the court-appointed Claims Administrator, Deloitte, announced today that more than $267 million in Compensation has been paid to Class Members who experienced discrimination in Canada’s First Nations Child and Family Services Program.
“We have reached a historic milestone in a years-long process,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “More than 86,000 Claims have already been filed, and more than $267 million in Compensation has been paid to more than 6,600 Class Members. The Removed Child Class has over 57,000 applications submitted, and the Removed Child Family Class has over 28,000. While no amount of money can make up for these systemic harms, Compensation is an acknowledgement of Canada’s wrongdoing. I thank our courageous Representative Plaintiffs, and all those who have dedicated time and resources to bring us thus far.”
There are time limits for making a Claim. Claimants who were over the age of majority on March 10, 2025, can submit their Claim now, until March 10, 2028. Otherwise, Claimants have three years to submit their Claim, once they reach the age of majority, in their province or territory. The Claims Process has been designed to be trauma-informed and Claimant-centred. Claims Helpers are available to support with documents and answer questions.
At this time, the AFN does not have a confirmed timeline for the launch of the remaining seven Classes. More information is available online at First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement: Home (fnchildclaims.ca).
