(June 22, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak extends her congratulations to the delegation from the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) as they participate in the Team Canada Trade Mission in Tokyo, Japan.
“I congratulate Grand Chief Kyra Wilson, Chief Sheldon Kent, and Councillor Rachel Ferreira as they represent Manitoba First Nations on the world stage,” said National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “Their presence in Tokyo demonstrates that First Nations are not only rights holders, but also economic leaders, innovators, and trading partners. The relationships being built through this mission have the potential to create lasting opportunities for First Nations citizens, businesses, and communities. I wish the delegation every success in their meetings and discussions throughout the trade mission.”
The delegation, led by AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson, is advancing First Nations interests and demonstrating the growing role of First Nations governments, entrepreneurs, and businesses in international trade, investment, and economic development. A special congratulations is extended to Chief Sheldon Kent and Black River First Nation for showcasing their wild rice product at the opening reception of the Team Canada Trade Mission. The promotion of First Nations-produced goods on the international stage reflects the strength of First Nations entrepreneurship and the enduring relationship First Nations people hold with the lands and waters that sustain their economies and cultures.
Members of the AMC delegation are also participating in discussions and engagements focused on defence, agriculture, and forestry, sectors that present significant opportunities for First Nations partnerships, economic growth, and the exercise of First Nations jurisdiction and stewardship.
The Assembly of First Nations recognizes the importance of ensuring First Nations are active participants in Canada’s international trade relationships and economic future. Trade missions like this provide valuable opportunities to build partnerships, attract investment, promote First Nations products and expertise, and strengthen nation-to-nation relationships beyond Canada’s borders.
The National Chief wishes the AMC delegation a productive and successful mission and looks forward to the opportunities and partnerships that may emerge from their engagement in Japan.
