(July 5, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak released the following statement today congratulating Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan on her appointment as the new Chief of Defence Staff:
“I extend my congratulations to Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan for her appointment as the new chief of Defence Staff. Her extensive experience and background make her a strong choice for this important position. I also celebrate Lieutenant-General Carignan as the first woman to be Chief of Defence Staff, marking a significant achievement in the advancement of women in leadership roles within the Canadian Armed Forces. I look forward to working with her to ensure the Canadian Armed Forces becomes an even more inclusive and welcoming to First Nations.
Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Wayne Eyre, for his four decades of dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces.”
