(March 8, 2025 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – Today, on International Women’s Day, National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak acknowledges and honours the strength, leadership, and contributions of First Nations women and girls.
“First Nations women have always carried our Nations forward, leading in our communities, upholding our cultures, and advocating for our rights,” said National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “International Women’s Day, with this year’s theme Accelerate Action, is a time to acknowledge their contributions and continue creating pathways for their success. Whether in governance, business, education, or the arts, First Nations women are leading change, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they have the support, resources, respect, and safety they deserve.”
This year, the National Chief will attend the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York, where she will advocate for First Nations women at an international level. CSW69 will focus on progress since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the ongoing work needed to achieve gender equity.
“First Nations women are driving progress in every field, overcoming barriers and creating opportunities for future generations. CSW69 is a chance to bring their voices to the global stage and push for action that supports their leadership, safety, and success,” concluded National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “On this International Women’s Day, we honour the women who came before us, stand with those leading change today, and commit to ensuring that First Nations women are recognized, respected, and supported now and in the future.”
