The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak is pleased to host a Networking Dinner for Indigenous Women attending UNCSW69 on March 10, 2025.

The objective of this networking dinner is to bring Indigenous women of all backgrounds together to share space ahead of the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW69). The evening will include a buffet dinner and formal remarks from the AFN National Chief.

The AFN National Chief’s UNCSW69 Networking Dinner is designed to empower and support Indigenous women attending UNCSW69 while also providing information on the AFN’s advocacy for gender justice and equality.

The evening will include:

  • Welcome reception: 5:30 p.m.
  • Buffet dinner: 6:15 p.m.
  • Remarks from AFN National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak: 6:45 p.m.
  • Conclusion of programming: 7:30 p.m.

United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is a global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. The UNCSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives around the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women alike.

The main focus of UNCSW69 taking part on March 10-21, 2025, will be to review the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing+30) and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly.

Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: An Action Plan to End Violence Against First Nations Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People

The Assembly of First Nations released the report, Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: An Action Plan to End Violence Against First Nations Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People on June 3, 2021. This report provides a national Framework for Supporting Survivors and Families, Prevention, and Healing Ourselves and Our First Nations. Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice is meant to be an “evergreen” document and will be updated following the AFN’s National MMIWG2S+ Gathering. 

The AFN coordinated and hosted the First National MMIWG2S+ Gathering in Vancouver, British Columbia from February 14 to 16, 2023. The Connecting Hearts and Making Change, Building on Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: An Action Plan to End Violence Against First Nations Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People, was created as an expression of the collective voice of survivors and families represented at the Gathering.

Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: A CFJ Progress Report

On June 3, 2024, the AFN released Progress on Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: A CFJ Progress Report, to serve as a monitoring tool of both governmental and non-governmental activities since the National Inquiry’s release of their Final Report. The AFN CFJ Report Card is the first update on progress made towards the full implementation of the CFJ and includes a summary of notable steps forward and backward during the five-year (2019-2024) review period.

AFN Resolutions

The First Nations-in-Assembly has passed several resolutions providing the mandate to carry out activities that support implementing the National Action Plan to end violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples, and advancing the implementation of the National Inquiry’s Calls for Justice. Recent resolutions include:

  1. AFN Resolution 89/2023, Call for Canada to Implement the National Inquiry’s 231 Calls for Justice related to MMIWG2S+ and First Nations Control of Funding
  2. AFN Resolution 17/2024, Call for International Collaboration on MMIWG2S+ and Rescinding Support for Leonard Peltier
  3. AFN Resolution 18/2024, Call for Acceleration of the MMIWG2S+ National Action Plan and Calls for Justice Implementation
