(February 6, 2026 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak issued the following statement on the opening today of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games:

“On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations, I extend goodwill and congratulations to all the athletes, organizers and volunteers participating in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

The Olympic Games remind us of the power of sport to bring people and the world together. Now more than ever is a time for all of us to embrace the vision of unity, balance and peace that is the spirit of the Olympic Games. For First Nations, they call us back to our values of respect, humility, courage and perseverance, that we can engage in respectful competition not simply to be the best but to bring out the best in ourselves.

We honour and congratulate all the Indigenous athletes from Canada and around the world who are competing at these Games. To the First Nations athletes on Team Canada, I want to say to you that you lift up our spirits. You are a shining example and inspiration. You show us what is possible when culture, identity, and excellence walk together. We wish you all the best during these Games. We will be cheering for you.

May the spirit of the Olympics strengthen understanding among peoples and remind us that unity and respect are not only possible, they are essential.”
