Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Text Messaging Service Privacy Policy
Overview
The Assembly of First Nations (“AFN”) is committed to protecting the privacy and personal information of First Nations individuals and communities. The AFN’s Federal Election Readiness and Outreach Campaign (the “Campaign”) includes an SMS text messaging service that provides First Nations electors with information on where, when, and how to vote in the 45th Federal Election (the “Service”). The AFN is committed to protecting the privacy and personal information of those who use the Service.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard information through the Service as part of the Campaign. In providing the Service, the AFN complies with applicable privacy laws and adheres to the principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP®).
By opting into the Service, users consent to receiving text messages from the AFN regarding election-related information, including through third-party service providers, and accept the terms of this Privacy Policy. Users can opt out at any time. Any personal information collected through the Service is used exclusively for the purposes of the Campaign.
The AFN does not sell or rent personal information. The AFN shares personal information with trusted third-party service providers only as necessary to support the operation of the Service. All personal information shared with third-party service providers is protected.
Information Collection
The AFN collects only the personal information necessary to provide the Service.
The types of personal information collected through the Service include:
- First and last name;
- Phone number;
- Opt-out preferences;
- User-submitted responses; and
- Device and network status for message delivery.
The AFN collects personal information in the following ways when users use the Service:
- Users provide information when they opt in to receive messages and respond to text-based interactions;
- Information may be obtained from third-party service providers, such as SurveyMonkey and SimpleTexting, when users engage with these platforms; and
- System and user data, including phone carrier, message delivery status, and error codes, may be gathered to ensure the functionality of the Service.
Use of Information
The collected information is used solely to facilitate AFN’s voter outreach efforts for the purposes of the Campaign, including:
- Providing users with information regarding where and when to vote;
- Notifying users of voter identification requirements;
- Informing users of election-related employment opportunities; and
- Sharing relevant polling station and candidate information with users.
Information Sharing and Security
The AFN takes reasonable precautions and appropriate security measures to protect personal information and user data from unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse.
The AFN does not sell or rent personal information. The AFN shares personal information with trusted third-party service providers only as necessary to support the operation of the Service. Such third-party service providers are contractually and legally required to protect personal information and user data and may not use it for any purpose other than supporting the operation of the AFN’s Service.
Opt-Out
Users may opt-out from the Service at any time by replying by text with STOP, CANCEL, or UNSUBSCRIBE. Opt-out requests are processed immediately. Users will no longer receive messages from the Service after opting out unless they opt back into the Service. Users may opt-in to the Service at any time by replying by text UNSTOP.
Policy Updates
The AFN reserves the right to modify this Privacy Policy as necessary from time to time. Any updates will be reflected in the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after policy changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
Rights and Contact Information
Under Canadian privacy laws, users have the right to:
- Access their personal information;
- Request corrections to inaccuracies in their personal information;
- Withdraw their consent to future communications; and
- File a complaint if they believe their privacy rights have been violated.
