Ottawa, ON – National Chief RoseAnne Archibald and the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) are delighted to celebrate the beginning of National Indigenous History Month this June. The nationally celebrated occasion offers a unique opportunity to recognize the milestones happening this month in support of First Nations communities in the lead-up to National Indigenous Peoples Day, observed annually on the summer solstice.
“I am pleased to recognize the beginning of National Indigenous History Month,” said National Chief RoseAnne Archibald. “The opportunity to spotlight Indigenous people across Turtle Island and celebrate our diverse perspectives, cultures, histories, and contributions is a welcome one. It’s also an opportunity for First Nations leadership at all levels to reaffirm the support we have for our community members who are all unique, resilient, and loved.”
National Chief attended the Ermineskin Cree Nation Powwow on May 28 and looks forward to participating in more ceremonies along the powwow trail this summer. “Our songs, drums, and dance are healing, and these events are a celebration and revitalization of our culture and traditions,” said National Chief.
On June 21, National Chief Archibald will join Natan Obed, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President, and Cassidy Caron, Métis National Council President, in Ottawa for trilateral meetings, celebrations, and announcements in support of National Indigenous Peoples Day. The three leaders are committed to working together on mutual priorities in support of their respective Indigenous communities.
“I invite everyone to celebrate Indigenous history not only during the month of June but as active partners on the Healing Path Forward,” concluded National Chief. “Our commitment to Truth, Reconciliation, and breaking the cycles of colonialism can only succeed when we lift up the voices of First Nations people and foster safe and vibrant communities.”
