The Assembly of First Nations issues regular updates on work underway at the national office.
Annual General Assembly
First Nations leaders, Elders, youth, women, and veterans gathered for the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) 44th Annual General Assembly held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from July 11-13, 2023.
During the assembly, First Nations-in-Assembly passed 34 resolutions, including AFN Resolution 67/2023, Denouncement of Manitoba Decision on Landfill Search for Remains of First Nations Women. Other resolutions passed during the AGA include Resolution 42/2023, Support for Legal Challenge by Three First Nations Police Services (Anishinabek Police Service, Treaty 3 Police Service, and UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service, and Resolution 47/2023, Proposed Federal First Nations Drinking Water and Wastewater Legislation. These resolutions are available on the AFN website.
Remaining Resolutions
An additional seven resolutions were referred to the AFN Executive Committee for decision. On July 26, 2023, the Executive Committee passed the following resolutions:
- 68/2023, Establishment of Inter-Regional Mutual Aid Agreements Among First Nations for Disaster Response and Resource Sharing
- 69/2023, National Indigenous Gaming Regulator
- 70/2023, Support for Treaty and Inherent Rights to Tax and Tariff Exemption
- 71/2023, Treaty Rights to Lands, Water, Hunting, Fishing, Trapping, and
Gathering
- 72/2023, First Nations-Led Procurement Organization and the National Benefits-Sharing Framework
- 73/2023. First Nations Rights-Based Inland Fisheries Framework
- 74/2023, Wage Parity for First Nations
Remaining resolutions not addressed by the Executive or during the Assembly will be tabled for discussion at the upcoming Special Chiefs Assembly scheduled from December 5-7 in Ottawa, Ontario.
