Description: The Assembly of First Nations is seeking an experienced and skilled individual who will be responsible for gathering and researching information related to fisheries, oceans, aquaculture, and marine activities. The policy analyst will provide recommendations for policy development, interpretation, and application, coordinate and deliver policy briefings, reports, and other written material related to a variety of complex First Nation issues in the area of fisheries, oceans, aquaculture, climate change, economic development and the advancement inherent Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. Communication and advocacy are also a significant component of the work. Ideally, candidates will have experience in writing proposals.
Who Can Apply: Persons who demonstrate the following qualifications. Note that First Nations candidates will be given preference (s. 16(1) CHRA). Applicants must possess:
• An post-secondary degree or diploma in the social or natural sciences (marine-related preferred) or a related field of study with 2-3 year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a specific policy area;
• A minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with First Nations and related policies;
• Knowledge and understanding of issues related to First Nations in Canada;
• Knowledge and understanding of issues related to fisheries, oceans, aquaculture, and marine activities at a federal, provincial, territorial, and/or international.
• Ability to translate complex ideas and information from various sources into concise written documents;
• Ability to research and analyze policies, regulations, and/or legislation
• Ability to communicate, both written and orally, to political and technical audiences;
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, teamwork, and judgement;
• Demonstrated time management, planning, and organizational skills;
• English is the working language; however, the ability to work in both official languages (English/French) or in an indigenous language is an asset

Location: Ottawa, Ontario (with consideration for remote working arrangements). Please note that the AFN is currently working remotely in an effort to ensure the health and well-being of our employees.
Duration: This is a maternity/parental leave replacement starting as soon as possible to November 12, 2021.
