(Ottawa, Unceded Algonquin Territory, ON) – The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Interim National Chief Joanna Bernard and AFN Executive Committee have extended their deepest condolences over the passing of music legend Robbie Robertson. Known for his work as a guitarist and songwriter for The Band, Robertson passed away on August 9, 2023, at the age of 80.

“On Wednesday, the world lost a tremendous musical talent,” said AFN Interim National Chief Joanna Bernard. “Robertson’s legacy includes countless songs that we all know and love. His talent was nurtured during years of visiting his family in the Six Nations of the Grand River community, and he will always be celebrated as a great First Nations musician.”

“Robertson’s proud First Nations roots will continue to inspire our communities and Canadians for years to come,” continued Interim National Chief Bernard. “The AFN Executive Committee and I send our condolences to his family, friends, and community, and our gratitude for their role in supporting Robertson as he developed into an exceptional artist. I hope we all can find comfort in his music as we process this loss.”
