About the Event Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) and Election of the National Chief
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) and Election of the National Chief will take place from December 5-7, 2023, in Ottawa, Ontario. The SCA will be held at the Shaw Centre, located at 55 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, K1N 9J2. Voting for the 2023 election of AFN National Chief will take place December 6, 2023.
The SCA will be hosted both in-person and online. Voting for National Chief will be conducted online using a digital ballot to accommodate Chiefs and proxies who will be attending virtually.
In accordance with AFN Resolution 34/2023, Appointment of a Chief Electoral Officer and the Timing of the Election of the National Chief, Ron Laufer was appointed as the Chief Electoral Officer for the election of the National Chief through an Executive Committee motion passed on September 25, 2023. Ron brings over 20 years of elections experience to the role, including the previous AFN virtual election in 2021.

Nominations
The nomination process is open October 11, 2023, until November 1, 2023, at 11:59pm EDT. Candidate Nomination Packages received after this date will not be accepted. The Election will take place on December 6, 2023, on Algonquin unceded territory (Ottawa, Ontario) where participants can join in-person or virtually. The Simply Voting platform will be used by all eligible voters.
Note: Pursuant to Resolution 34/2023, the term of the next National Chief was adjusted to expire in the month of July 2027, extending the term of office to three years and six months.
In order to become a Candidate for National Chief in the 2023 AFN Election, and as per Appendix A (1990) of the AFN Charter, potential Candidates for the Office of National Chief must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be eighteen (18) years of age and over;
- Be of First Nations ancestry;
- Belong to a First Nation community in good standing as a Member of the Assembly of First Nations;
- Be endorsed by fifteen (15) eligible electors, i.e., Chiefs representing First Nations which are Members of the Assembly of First Nations, at least eight (8) of whom must be from a province or territory other than that from which the Candidate comes; and
- Complete and submit a Candidate Nomination Package in proper form to the Chief Electoral Officer, in addition to meeting the requirements of Appendix A (1990) of the AFN Charter, by the specified deadline.

Nominations for National Chief candidates will begin October 11, 2023. Official forms for nominations will be made available through the Chief Electoral Officer. Nominations require 15 endorsements from Chiefs from AFN member Nations.

Candidates for National Chief will have the opportunity to make statements and respond to questions from voters during the AFN Special Chiefs Assembly.

Election Day
Voting for the 2023 election of AFN National Chief will take place December 6, 2023. Chiefs and proxies casting votes online and by telephone will do so through the Simply Voting online system. This system has been internationally tested for accuracy and efficiency. Online voting is subject to audit to ensure accuracy of results.
